Talent Discovery: Lokua

Lokua (born Joshua Jay Kleckner) is a master of texture and mood with his own unique melodic statement – submerged in vast harmonies and layers of complex rhythmic syncopation. Heavily influenced as a child by Chicago’s gritty hip-hop scene and undeniable house presence led Lokua to start producing in 1995, where-after he majored in music composition at Columbia College, Chicago. Earlier works consist largely of down-tempo instrumental hip-hop (literally thousands of tracks). Recent works branch out to include a large scope of electronic genres with a significant amount of ambient and dance material. His sound is characterized by the richness and sincerity of its emotional content with even danciest of tracks retaining a deep, cerebral sophistication. Currently Lokua is completely immersed in the art of live P/A – often free-styling entire sets – rocking all walks of Chicago night-life from art shows to dance clubs including residencies at Darkroom, Subterranean, Rodan, and Morseland. Lokua is also Co-founder of the multi-faceted Moment Sound label, a label whose focus is on the aesthetic of innovation rooted in tradition – a meeting point of the past and the future – the sound of the moment. Performing live electronics together since the early 2000s, maintaining a net-label and currently celebrating their first vinyl release, they are a versatile force in the Chicago music scene.
